Brendoncare

Brendoncare

Brendoncare, the Winchester-based care charity for older people, is quite a remarkable organisation. It was established in 1984 out of one man’s vision - Sir Ronald Gibson - and was one of the first organisations to offer dual registered homes, providing both residential and nursing care under one roof. In contrast with the strict regime of residential homes at that time, Brendoncare offered discreet, comfortable and flexible care, with a minimum of rules and choice offered wherever feasible.

Twenty-five years later it has 10 care centres across the south, it provides outreach, close care and daycare services and, in addition, it has established a network of over 70 social and well-being clubs providing friendship and support and tackling social isolation.

“Not only has Brendoncare developed innovative models of care which are setting new precedents and standards in the sector,” explains Hugh Thompson, Head of Fundraising at Brendoncare, “but it has also devised innovative funding schemes to develop its expansion of homes and services.” Its latest residential development, Brendoncare Knightwood is a prime example. The innovative Total Care Living concept combines independently-owned accommodation, 24/7 nursing facilities and services such as a restaurant, hairdressing salon and fitness centre.

“The scheme has been developed in partnership with health and social care service providers. Looking forward we are developing long-term, mutually-beneficial relationships with other charities, land owners, developers, care organisations and health care professionals.”

Charities operate in a highly regulated environment, and for a fast-moving organisation such as Brendoncare, which is pioneering new business models, it’s important that it gets experienced advice from its accounting team. Barry Lynch, senior partner at the accountancy firm Rothmans, has worked with Brendoncare since it was formed and has provided financial guidance throughout its history.

“Brendoncare is one of the most innovative charities with which we work,” explains Barry Lynch. “A comprehensive understanding of the Charity Commission’s requirements is essential if we are to provide the most effective advice, as is a thorough knowledge of charity law and taxation.

“Current economic conditions make it difficult for all charity and not-for-profit organisations and so breadth and depth of experience is vital in financial advice. Our charity team is highly experienced in analysing risks and opportunities and assisting in strategic planning and forecasting – all of which are requirements in helping our clients maximise their resources and continue growth strategies in uncertain times.”
